"The aims and intentions for this exhibition are, in the main, conventional and encapsulated in the title. Congress: The Social Body in Three Figurative Painters is a thematic exhibition occupied with the group compositions of three South African painters: Trevor Makhoba (1956-2003), George Pemba (1912-2001) and Sthembiso Sibisi (1976-2006). Originating out of two regions in South Africa with their own distinct histories of painting- Pemba from the Eastern Cape, and Makhoba and Sibisi from KwaZuluNatal - this multi-generational group of painters is linked across time and space by their shared aesthetic interest in the human figure and gregarious visions of community." - Sean O'Toole, Guest Curator

2 October 2021 - 10 January 2022. Gallery 9, Norval Foundation
